Time-outs and self-exclusion: the strongest stop-points

The three stop-points — clock time, money and state of mind — work evening by evening. Sometimes, though, the problem is not one session but the habit: stop-points get skipped, warning lights come on one after another, and every "from tomorrow" gets postponed. For those periods the ladder has its two heaviest rungs, the time-out and self-exclusion. This page explains how they differ, the order of steps, and the things people usually learn too late.

A time-out is not self-exclusion

The exact durations and rules are set by the operator. We do not know which menu every Sly account shows, so open the account settings (usually a responsible-gambling or limits section) or ask support in writing which periods are offered.

Before you request it: four preparation steps

  1. Withdraw your balance. Money left in the account is the most common reason to "just take a look" again. Request a withdrawal and wait for the confirmation.
  2. Drop active bonuses. An unfinished wagering requirement feels like unfinished business and pulls you back. If a bonus blocks the withdrawal, losing it is cheaper than playing on for it.
  3. Switch off marketing. Promotional emails, SMS and push messages can be turned off in the marketing preferences. Do it the same day.
  4. Note the dates. When the period starts and when it ends, so the expiry does not catch you at a bad moment.

How to submit the request

If the settings include a self-exclusion button, use it and screenshot the confirmation. If not, write to support by email or chat so that a written record remains. A short message is enough: "Please self-exclude my account [username] for [period] starting today. Please confirm in writing and stop all marketing messages." You do not have to explain your reasons.

Keep the reply. If you later receive promotional mail or can still log in despite the request, that is grounds for a complaint.

Why not open an account elsewhere

Excluding yourself with one operator does not protect you at the others. The riskiest moment is the first week, when the urge finds a loophole on a neighbouring site. If you have accounts with other operators, send them the same request. Some countries run a national self-exclusion scheme that covers all licensed operators; check with your regulator whether yours does, and don't assume a single request closes every door. Device-level gambling blockers and, where your bank offers it, a block on card payments to gambling merchants add further layers.

What to do with the freed-up time

Play usually occupied particular hours — evenings after work, Sunday afternoons, the commute. If those hours stay empty, the habit moves back in. It helps to fill them in advance with something concrete, even something dull. If you feel you are not coping alone, contact your national gambling helpline. In Bulgaria that is the National Information Line on Drugs, Alcohol and Gambling, 0888-99-18-66: anonymous, working days 11:00–17:00, and charged at your mobile tariff rather than free.

When the period ends

Expiry is not an invitation. If you decide to return, start with the lowest limits the settings allow and a time stop earlier than your old one. If a warning light comes on during the very first evening, that is your answer — renew the exclusion for a longer period.

Questions about time-outs and self-exclusion

Can I cancel self-exclusion early?
With most licensed operators, no. That is exactly what separates it from a time-out: a decision taken on a calm day cannot be undone on a difficult one. Check the operator's terms for the precise rules.
What happens to the money in my account?
It depends on the operator. The safe order is to withdraw your balance first, keep the withdrawal confirmation, and only then submit the self-exclusion request.
Does excluding at Sly block me everywhere?
No. Self-exclusion with one operator applies to that account. If you hold accounts elsewhere, send the same request to each operator, and consider device-level gambling blockers as an extra layer.
How long should a time-out be?
Long enough to cover at least one full pay cycle, usually a month. A pause of a day or two only helps you cool down after one bad evening.
